If you have been newly diagnosed with asthma, you may be able to keep your symptoms under control. This is only if you keep your inhaler with you at all times, however. It can be easy to forget your inhaler which is why you need to know what to do if you have an asthma attack. Knowing this information can save your life. Keep reading so you will be prepared if this happens to you.
An asthma attack can be very scary so it may be hard to think straight. Because of this, people around you should also know this information, especially family members in your home and friends that you hang out with often. Some of the important information you should know includes:
Sit Up Straight
The first thing you should do is to make sure you sit down and sit up straight. This will prevent your breathing from becoming constricted. If you lean over then this puts pressure on your esophagus, which can cause breathing problems. Relax as much as you can and take deep breaths very slowly. Taking these breaths will help prevent you from hyperventilating. Hyperventilating will cause you to breathe very fast, which can cause shortness of breath. If you cannot stay calm, then your chest muscles will tighten making it harder for you to breathe. Hyperventilating will also cause you to become very dizzy and you may pass out.
Move to a Safe Area
When you start to feel better enough that you can move, then you need to move away from what is triggering you to have your asthma attack. This could be an area that has a lot of dust, or where someone is smoking.
Choose an area that has clean air, such as an air-conditioned room. When you get to the safe area, ask someone to bring you a hot drink, such as coffee or hot tea. The heat from these drinks can help your chest muscles become looser, which will help you breathe better.
You need to see a doctor as soon as you can after your asthma attack. If you are having a lot of trouble breathing then someone will likely call 911., If not then someone needs to.
Your doctor is the best person for you to get asthma attack treatment from. The doctor can give you more information about asthma, as well as answer any questions that you may have about this condition.Share
