Reasons You May Want To See A Neurologist

Posted on: 5 May 2020

Most people do not spend a lot of time thinking about going to the doctor at all, let alone whether or not they should go see someone like a brain specialist. However, brain specialists, also known as neurologists, can provide people with numerous benefits and treatments that can help them with their daily lives. Most people just don't realize when they should go schedule a neurologist appointment. Get to know some of the reasons that you might want to see a neurologist. Then if any of these scenarios apply to your life, you should schedule the appointment right away.

You Have Diabetes and Have Pain Along with It

Diabetes is not a neurological condition, but the physical pain that it can cause throughout the body is known as neuropathic pain and is related to the nervous system and brain. Your diabetes can actually cause damage to the nervous system which results in chronic pain that cannot be treated with common over-the-counter, or even prescription painkillers.

In such cases, a neurologist is going to be your best bet in managing and treating that pain. Your neurologist can work with your endocrinologist to ensure that your diabetes is well-managed, and they can prescribe you medications and treatments for the pain itself.

You Have Chronic Headaches or Migraines

Another issue that can best be treated by a neurologist is chronic headaches or migraines. Migraines are a specific type of headache that is severe and can cause other symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and more. These should be treated by a neurologist.

Chronic headaches of any type, though, could be cause to go to the neurologist because having frequent headaches is not normal under any circumstances. If, for example, you have headaches at least once a week, you should see a specialist as soon as possible. There are numerous underlying conditions that can cause these headaches, all of which will require treatment to be managed.

You're Getting Very Forgetful

Neurologists do not just deal with pain issues. They also work on other brain and nervous system conditions as well. And if you are having issues with your memory and are becoming very forgetful lately, you may have cause to see a neurologist. Neurologists treat memory conditions like Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. They also can treat people who have brain damage from concussions, stroke, or other conditions.

If you have been forgetful lately, one of the aforementioned conditions could be the cause (though they may not be as well). A neurologist will talk to you and run tests to determine what if any condition is causing your memory loss.

Now that you know a few of the reasons you may want to see a neurologist, you can schedule your appointment right away if any of these situations apply to you. Contact a clinic like North Texas Neuroscience Center PA for more information.
